At Hummersknott we believe in providing a broad education which equips students with the knowledge, skills, values and attributes which will enable them to be successful in their chosen careers. Central to this are high levels of literacy and numeracy. Our results in English and Mathematics are consistently high.
In an increasingly global economy, we also believe that the language skills we develop will be essential in later life.
The success of the school in preparing students for later life can be seen in the fact that over 90% stay on in Further Education and more students go on to University than in any other school in Darlington.
As a school we also believe that our wide range of extra-curricular activities engender self-confidence and encourage students to adopt positive healthy lifestyles.
We believe in giving a wide range of choices with an extensive guidance programme including individual interviews for parents and children to support this.
Our curriculum is flexible and aimed at making sure all have choice and can succeed, we offer four languages. Some students choose the three separate sciences, others choose to follow one of several vocational options such as Media, Health & Social Care or Business.
Following the introduction of the new National Curriculum, the disappearance of the old National Curriculum levels and the arrival of new GCSEs, the Academy has developed a new approach to curriculum structure, assessment and feedback. This approach is based on three pathways, breaking down the skills and knowledge needed for success in each subject.
Please find below a leaflet for parents and a Powerpoint presentation used to introduce Assessment without Levels. These will hopefully help you to understand the approach more fully. If you have any questions that you would like to ask, please do not hesitate to contact the Academy.
